Westbard: A Growing District Close to Washington, DC

Westbard is an area of Bethesda that contains small shopping centers, a section of the Capital Crescent Trail, and a few condominium communities. Its two major thoroughfares, River Road and Massachusetts Avenue, feed straight into Washington, DC, the boundary of which is located a mile and a half away from Westbard.

Residents have access to grocery stores, a library, and a public school within the community. Other Bethesda attractions, such as Bethesda Row and The Shops at Wisconsin Place in Friendship Village, are just a few minutes away by car or public transit.

The Westbard Sector Plan

In 2014, the owners of the Westwood Shopping Center proposed a redevelopment of the shopping area from the current strip mall into a more pedestrian-friendly destination on Westbard Avenue. The new Westwood Shopping Center would feature a new shuttle service to nearby Metro stations, open spaces that could be used for events, and urban design.

Commuting to Washington, DC

River Road and Massachusetts Avenue are the major roads that let residents travel by car from Westbard into Washington, DC. Though there is no Metro station within this area of Bethesda, public transportation (provided through Montgomery County's RideOn bus service and WMATA's MetroBus) connects Westbard-area condo residents to nearby stations in Bethesda and Washington, DC.
